Women/Men Relative Strength CS Education Metrics Dashboards 2022

Women/Men RS CS Ed metrics

The blog post Women in HS CS: Just get them in the door! introduced several metrics that illuminated how well states encouraged and supported high school women taking CS in 2021. These metrics were reVISIONed using Tableau in the post Women/Men Relative Strength CS Education Metrics Dashboards 2021. Data from these posts showed that although women participated in HS CS at less than half the rate of men, those that participated took and passed AP exams at a rate roughly equivalent to men.

This post provides an update to these women/men relative strength statistics with data from 2022. All of these statistics are based on data provided in the 2022 State of CS Education report published by Code.org, CSTA, and the ECEP Alliance and data on the 2022 AP CS exams from Barbara Ericson’s Computing for Everyone blog. Note that 2022 state-specific dashboards published in early 2023 used AP data from 2021.  However, as AP data for 2021-22 became available in April 2023, future posts on 2022 results will use this cleaner and better synchronized dataset instead.

Metric 2021 Nat Avg 2022 Nat Avg Interpretation
Women/Men CS School Attendance Relative Strength 100% (estimate) 100% (estimate) Women are just as likely as men to attend a high school with a CS course
Women/Men CS Uptake Ratio Relative Strength 47.3% 48.0% Women are 52.0% less likely than men to enroll in a CS course in schools that offer CS. Data available for 36 states.
Women/Men AP/CS Uptake Ratio Relative Strength 98.4% 97.3% Of students enrolled in an CS course, Women are 2.7% less likely to take an AP Exam than men.   Approximately five times as many students enroll in an CS class as take an AP exam. Data available for 36 states.
Women/Men AP All Uptake Ratio Relative Strength 46.1% 46.0% Of students in a HS offering CS, Women are 54.0% less likely to take an AP Exam than men.  Logically, this is the product of the CS Uptake Ratio and the AP/CS Uptake ratio. However, this data covers the 51 states reporting whereas the CS Uptake Ratio and AP/CS Uptake Ratio is available for only 36 states.
Women/Men AP Pass Rate Relative Strength 96.4% 94.5% Of students taking an AP CS exam, women are 5.5% less likely to pass the exam than men.
